Potty training requires patients and strategy on your part. It is a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week job. Efficiently trained (FULL TIME), a puppy or dog can be potty trained in as little as two weeks. T Trained inefficiently (PART TIME) it can take months and in many cases will become difficult to break. The truth is that it is YOU who decides how long it takes to potty train your dog or puppy. Here are some helpful tips: Have a strategy in place before bringing your new dog or puppy into your home. Buy a potty training book, video, or go online and find information there. Part of potty training is creativity. There are many ways to train. Find what works well for your dog and your lifestyle. Set a pattern down from day one. Or your dog will set his own. Practice umbilical cord bonding. This is done by keeping the pup attached to you for the first 2 weeks with the leash so the puppy is always being watched and directed by you whenever it's awake. Being consistent is the key to teaching a new behavior in the shortest amount of time. Take your puppy out every hour at first just to get a solid pattern set, but don't give the puppy more than 5 minutes to potty. They need to understand it's not play and explore time. Use only one door as the exit to go potty. This will set a pattern that will enable the puppy to learn quickly where he/she should go to alert you when it needs to go outside. Do not free feed your puppy. Offer food 2 or 3 times a day as directed by your veterinarian and remove it after 15 minutes if animal does not eat it all. This will help regulate the frequency of elimination allowing you to better predict when your dog might need to go. Always use the ABC's of the SMARTEST DOG TRAINING and other positive reinforcement methods anytime you train your dog. Providing your dog is healthy, all dogs can be potty trained. It is not about breed or smarts on the dog's part. It's about how effective you are in showing a dog where you expect it to eliminate. |
